This privacy policy describes how The Hirschsprung Collection collects and uses the personal data that you leave and/or provide when you visit our website and use the various services and features we offer on it.

1. Collection of personal data


We always inform you before we collect your personal data. We collect the following personal data about you:

  • When you subscribe to our newsletter: name and email address.
  • For bookings of guided tours and educational activities, The Hirschsprung Collection uses the external partner Gecko to process personal data on our behalf. A data processing agreement has been concluded with Gecko to ensure that personal data is processed in accordance with the GDPR. To book a guided tour or an educational activity, you must provide the following: name of institution or group, name, address, email address and telephone number.

Please note that certain personal data is necessary in order for you to use the features of the website. If you choose not to provide the data in question, you may not be able to use the desired feature. For example, we need your contact details in order to answer an enquiry from you.


If you provide personal data about persons other than yourself, we encourage you to first obtain the consent of those persons.

2. Use of personal data, purposes and legal basis


We collect and use personal data in connection with the features and purposes described below. We may also process your personal data for other purposes where we are entitled or obliged to do so under applicable law (for example in relation to state security).

  • When you subscribe to our newsletter: name and email address.
  • For bookings of guided tours or educational activities: name of institution or group, name, address, email address and telephone number.
  • For purchases in our webshop: name, address and payment card details.
  • For job applications, we use your personal data to process your application.
  • In order to troubleshoot and trace problems on the site, IP addresses are handled internally on the server. We retain IP addresses only for as long as this is relevant.

3. Cookies and consent to cookies


How we use cookies


We aim to collect as little information about you as possible when you visit hirschsprung.dk. Apart from the cookies that are necessary for the website to work and to be secure, we only set cookies if you have given your consent.


The first time you visit the website, you are therefore asked in a cookie banner. You can accept or decline within four categories:

  • Necessary. Make the website work and protect it against misuse, including so-called CSRF attacks (Cross-Site Request Forgery). These are always set and do not require consent.
  • Preferences. Remember your choices, for example your cookie consent, so that you do not have to decide again on every visit.
  • Statistics. Give us insight into how the website is used, so that we can improve it.
  • Marketing. Are used to show the museum's advertisements, including on social media, and to measure whether those advertisements work.

You can change or withdraw your consent at any time via the "Cookie settings" link at the bottom of the page.


Which cookies we actually set


The full and always up-to-date list is shown in the cookie declaration at the bottom of this page. It shows each individual cookie, who sets it, what it is used for and how long it is stored. The list is maintained by an automatic scan of the website every month.


Visitor statistics


For visitor statistics we use Plausible Analytics. It is a privacy-friendly analytics tool that does not set cookies and does not identify individual users. Read more about Plausible Analytics' data policy.


Video and booking

  • Video playback. YouTube (Google) sets cookies when you play a video embedded from YouTube. The video is only loaded once you click on it yourself. YouTube uses cookies for several purposes, including functionality, analytics, advertising and personalisation. Read Google's cookie policy.
  • Booking. Bookings of guided tours and educational activities are handled by our partner Gecko, which uses a functional session cookie to remember your choices. It is stored in your browser only while you are actively visiting the website.

Ticket purchases


Tickets are purchased in the museum's ticket shop at billet.hirschsprung.dk, which is operated by our supplier Amero. The ticket shop does not set cookies for statistics or marketing.


What is a cookie


Cookies are used on virtually all websites today and are in many cases necessary in order to deliver the services of a website.


A cookie is a small text file that is stored on the user's IT equipment (PC, tablet, smartphone or similar) so that the equipment can be recognised. Among other things, cookies can be used to compile statistics on how visitors use a website and to optimise its content. A cookie is a passive file and cannot collect information from the user's computer or spread computer viruses or other harmful programs. Some cookies are placed by parties other than the one shown in the address bar (the URL) of the browser, so-called third parties. This may be ordinary content, but also, for example, analytics tools or embedded comment fields. It means that cookies from parties other than the owner of the website are stored.


Some cookies are stored on the user's IT equipment only for as long as the browser is open (session cookies). Other cookies are stored for a longer period (persistent cookies). When the user revisits a website, session cookies are set anew, while persistent cookies are typically renewed.


How to delete or avoid cookies


In addition to withdrawing your consent via "Cookie settings", you can delete cookies yourself in your browser. How this is done depends on the browser.


If you use a PC, cookies can be deleted using the keyboard shortcut [CTRL]+[SHIFT]+[Delete]. If that does not work, or if you use a Mac, for example, you can follow the instructions for your browser:


Why we inform you about cookies


All Danish websites are obliged to inform users about which cookies are placed on their IT equipment. The information must comply with the Danish Executive Order on requirements for information and consent for the storage of and access to information in end users' terminal equipment, commonly known as the Cookie Order. Both texts are available in Danish only.

4. Consent


When you use our website, we in some cases collect and process your personal data on the basis of your consent, see section 2 above.


Please note that you can withdraw your consent at any time. This can be done by contacting us (see contact details in section 9 below). Consent to cookies is withdrawn via the "Cookie settings" link at the bottom of the page.


If you withdraw your consent, we will stop processing your personal data unless we are entitled or obliged to continue the processing or storage of your personal data on another basis, including under applicable law.


Withdrawal of your consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before the withdrawal.


If you withdraw your consent, you may not be able to make full use of the features we offer on our website.

5. Security


We have implemented appropriate technical and organisational security measures to ensure an adequate level of security, for example through the use of an SSL certificate. We thereby do our best to safeguard the quality and integrity of your personal data.

6. Your rights


You have the right to obtain access to the personal data we process about you, with certain exceptions laid down by law.


In addition, you may object to the collection and further processing of your personal data. You also have the right to have your personal data rectified, or to ask us to restrict the processing of it.


If you ask us to, we will erase the personal data we have registered about you without undue delay, unless we can continue the processing on another basis, for example if the processing is necessary in order to establish a legal claim, or if it is necessary in order to answer an enquiry from you.


If you wish to exercise your rights as described above, you are welcome to contact us (see contact details in section 9 below).


When making enquiries regarding your rights, we ask you to provide us with sufficient information for us to process your enquiry, including your full name and email address, so that we can identify you and respond to your request. We will respond to your enquiry as soon as possible and no later than within one month.


If you disagree with the way we process your personal data, or with the purposes for which we process it, you are welcome to contact us. You may also lodge a complaint with the Danish Data Protection Agency:

Our website may contain links to other websites. We are not responsible for the content of other websites (third-party websites) or for the procedures such third parties have for the collection and processing of personal data. We reserve the right to change this privacy policy due to significant changes in legislation, new technical solutions, new or improved features, or in order to improve the website.
