Symbolism
For upper-secondary schools, HF and adult education centres
An inward gaze characterises many of the figures portrayed in Danish Symbolist art. Works by Vilhelm Hammershøi, Ejnar Nielsen and L.A. Ring share a sense of quiet contemplation, often rooted in religious or spiritual concerns. The programme explores the period’s so-called ‘breakthrough of the inner world’ and draws connections with contemporary literature.
