Anna Ancher’s Eye for Colour

Anna Ancher is one of the great figures of Danish art, and she remained at the height of her powers throughout her career. Interior from the Living Room from 1915 is a striking example of her exceptional skill as an artist.

Colour seems to burst from Anna Ancher’s masterful 1915 painting Interior from the Living Room.

The painting is one of Anna Ancher’s later works. We are looking towards a wall in the west sitting room of the home she shared with Michael Ancher in Skagen. Along the opposite wall are pieces of furniture that remain in the house today, the family piano and three important works of art: Michael Ancher’s portrait of Ane Brøndum, P.S. Krøyer’s portrait bust of Michael Ancher and Krøyer’s final self-portrait from 1909.

The painting’s most vibrant focal points, however, are the large bouquets. Stems, petals, poppies and lupins spill exuberantly into the room in vivid colours.

Several of Anna Ancher’s characteristic motifs are present: an unseen window as the source of light, patches of sunlight on the floor and the depiction of a personal interior.

With this acquisition, The Hirschsprung Collection now holds 15 works by Anna Ancher.

The acquisition of Interior from the Living Room was supported by the New Carlsberg Foundation. The museum is grateful for its generous support.
