Blind figures, empty rooms and mysterious landscapes – Symbolist art is introspective and open to interpretation. At The Hirschsprung Collection, artists such as Vilhelm Hammershøi, Harald Slott-Møller, L.A. Ring and Ejnar Nielsen helped bring emotion, atmosphere and the inner life to the forefront of art at the end of the 19th century. For this reason, Symbolism is sometimes described as a breakthrough of the inner world.
This learning programme explores the use of symbols and examines how Symbolist artists approached themes such as life, death, religion and love.
